Recently we received some questions about how Google uses (or more accurately, doesn't use) the "keywords" meta tag in ranking web search results. Suppose you have two website owners, Alice and Bob. Alice runs a company called AliceCo and Bob runs BobCo. One day while looking at Bob's site, Alice notices that Bob has copied some of the words that she uses in her "keywords" meta tag. Even more interesting, Bob has added the words "AliceCo" to his "keywords" meta tag. Should Alice be concerned?
Wondering about the "keywords" meta tag ranking on your website and whether this is important? Read this great article from Google's blog on this. We've heard for years how important your meta tags are. And although other search engines use this, according to this article, Google does not pay attention to meta tags. It is still considered "best practices" to include this since other search engines do pay attention to this. Let me know what you think.
I had to share this funny YouTube video provided courtesy of HubSpot on how to (not to) use Twitter. Hubspot is a great pay it forward company with lots of valuable training and
products for social media including blogging, social networking and more. This recommendation from me for HubSpot is probably more than you'll see from them. These guys did such a good job on this skit. Quite the professionals on spoofing The Office. Wonder if
they had acting lessons? So, you want to find out what Twitter is (or perhaps isn't?
Watch this and enjoy.

Love this updated “Social Media Revolution” Video on YouTube. It you’re thinking of developing your social media marketing strategy but still can’t figure out why you should, this may help you decide. It's engaging and interesting and I've commented and summed up some of the findings. Scroll down to see the video.
Although I did not fact check them, according to this video:
One out of eight couples married in the US last year met via social media (perhaps social networks like Match and Eharmony?)
Radio took 38 years to reach 50 million users, TV took 13 years, the internet took 4 years, Apple Ipods took 3 years, and Facebook, one of my favorite social networks, added 100 million users in less than 9 months!
My gosh, according to the video, if Facebook were a country it would be the fourth largest behind China, India, United States and then Facebook.
Also another fact in the recent 2009 US Department of Education study revealed on average, online students out performed those receiving face-to-face instruction. Here's a link to the report. Let me know how what you think.
This is a big one: 80% of companies are using LinkedIn as their primary tool to find employees. I understand Monster and some of the other career job sites can be quite expensive.
The fastest growing percentage segment on Facebook is women 55 and over. Since I am a baby boomer, I love this stat. Us boomers still have a lot of drive and ambition.
Move over Ireland, Norway and Panama. Did you know that Ashton Kutcher and Ellen DeGeneres have more Twitter followers than the entire population of those three countries? That's a lot of Tweeters.
And here’s one I’m not involved with because I know I would be too addicted but 80% of Twitter usage is on mobile devices. And what could this mean for bad customer service?
YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world – okay, that is my next project and I can't wait. We are talking over 100,000,000 videos.
If you were paid $1 for every time an article was posted on Wikipedia, you would earn $156.23 per hour.
There are over 200,000,000 blogs and 54% of bloggers post or tweet daily. And isn't it fun?
People talk about brands online: 78% of consumers trust what their peers say about brands - compared to only 14% trust advertisements. Have you found yourself doing internet searches to see what others have said about things they've bought that you're considering also? Ever searched on Twitter?
hulu (yes, not capitalized) has grown from 63 million streams to 373 million in one year. Wonder what type of affect this is having or will have on cable television.
We no longer search for the news, the news finds us. Anytime I get on my home page, Yahoo, I click on the news. I also receive New York Times emails updating the latest headlines. Plus, Twitter users tweet as the news is happening around them making news instantaneous.
This is a big one and one huge reason to be implementing your social media plan: In the near future, we will no longer search for products and services, they will find us via social media.
Love this one: Social media isn’t a fad, it’s a fundamental shift in the way we communicate. And I would say a positive way of communicating where we are not pushing our agenda but being helpful, pulling customers towards us - the inbound marketing way.
And another one to love: Successful companies in social media act more like Dale Carnegie and less like David Ogilvy – Listening first, selling second. Look at my previous post where I write about Chris Brogan and being nice.

My first jewelry ecommerce website went live in 1996
and as soon as I could I started selling merchandise on Ebay. Fast forward to 2008 when I originally
started blogging for search engine optimization purposes for my jewelry company
in February of 2008. I had “invested” in an SEO guaranteed top ten placement
package from a a very well known company right before I started my first blog.
I received more hits to my website from traffic
that came from my blog compared to the top ten obscure search engines they
ranked. And the point is: I’ve been into social media for quite a while, really
soaking up every webinar and seminar I could attend, participating in social networks, reading, etc. I’ve helped quite a few
customers and individuals ramp up their social media efforts and have held quite
a few social media training sessions.
It’s been
fun. But I’ve been the cobbler’s kids without the shoes knowing that the
branding of my new company, Your Marketing Gal, would catch up when the time was
right. If I could actually be in the field doing things and using my expertise
to help businesses and individuals with their marketing efforts, that’s fine
with me.
I know, I know branding is very important – especially for a company
that helps others brand and market themselves. And I was reminded of this by my
marketing and business development friends that worked for media companies. If I
am wanting to sell this type of service, I really needed to show others how I
did it.
I know - they are right but I figured if I had the opportunity to work with customers and train
others, guess which one I was taking?Same thing
with my wholesale/retail jewelry importing company. I remember a few people
starting their business about the same time as I had in the the early 90’s. They
were concerned about creating the perfect logo that matched their cards that
matched their stationary and envelopes, etc. They seemed to worry more about the
small details and it stopped them from marketing themselves. I didn’t worry or
let it stop me from marketing my business. Eventually I caught up with the
“branding” – although I always boot strapped my company.
In reading Chris Brogan’s recent blog entry entitled Community Can Be SO
Powerful, I realize that we all have to start
somewhere and it’s okay if we do. In 2005, Chris approached the CEO of a “very
up-and-coming-company” at a conference. The CEO was not very interested in him
even though Chris told him how much he loved his company. Chris said that since
it was face to face, he felt the CEO could have been more polite.
According to
Chris Brogan’s blog entry, the company was sold for pennies on the dollar just
two years later and the former CEO found himself needing Chris' help. Chris did
help him instead of refusing and reminding him or shaming him of what had
happened earlier.
From what I’ve read about Chris
Brogan and through a webinar I recently listened to in my Inbound Marketing
University, he really believes in “community” and being nice. It reminds me of
the philosophy I believe in - paying it forward – yes perhaps a cliché, but I
know it feels great to see how I can help others. It always comes back to me
amazingly so.
And for that I am truly helpful to my
network of "friends” – both online and personally. It’s amazing how I’ve seen
such a shift in how people approach each other and how willing they are to help
others. I believe it really is about how we can help others. It’s so great to
see a quiet, steady process where the new business of social media seems to
vw changing business philosophy. And Chris, it’s
great to see nice people out in the business world impacting others,
evangelizing to others to be nice as well. Thank you.
And
as I launch this new website and take some time to brand my
company, I have to admit - it feels good to put my shoes on. Oh and here's my logo - had to shamelessly show it to you! Perhaps not the social media thing to do - but an entrepreneur bootstrapping their business using their - okay my creativity - at least for now.
